There's so much to do in the area, both in Summer and Winter. The area is crowded with historical buildings such as Ampleforth Abbey, Helmsley and Pickering castles, Rievaulx Abbey, Duncombe Park, and Castle Howard (where Brideshead Revisited was filmed). Or you may prefer to travel to the coast to see Whitby (where the best fish and chips are), the old smuggling village of Robin Hood's Bay, or the beaches at Scarborough and Sandsend. If you're keen to get to the shops then take a trip to the pretty market town of Helmsley which boasts some good cafes too! Or travel to York (approximately 45 minutes), a beautiful Roman city full of history, shops and continental atmosphere. Thirsk is 20 minutes away; this was the home of James Herriot and houses an interesting museum displaying exhibits about his life and work. For train enthusiasts, the National Railway Museum at York is not to be missed, and there is also the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which runs from Pickering through wonderful scenery up to Goathland (Heartbeat country). There are plenty of gardens to visit - nearby are the Helmsley Walled Garden, Duncombe Park and Castle Howard; further afield are Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey, and Scampston Walled Garden. Of course, North Yorkshire is prime walking country, with landscapes of sea, woods and hills, and even a short stroll will be rewarding. Mountain bikers can explore the wealth of tracks in Dalby forest; some of these are also suitable for wheelchair users. For indoor pursuits the St Albans Sports centre and swimming pool are only 5 minutes away from the cottage. We've visited a lot of these places and many more in the area, and are on hand to make further suggestions or to offer advice if needs be!
